Friend Sturtevant was the son of Dr Josiah Sturtevant. Dr Josiah Sturtevant was a loyalist and during the Revolutionary war he fled to Boston and was given a position in the British army as surgeon which he held till his death which occurred soon after from disease contracted by exposure. He was buried under the Old South Church. In the family record is this entry made by his widow Aug 18 1776: my dear husband departed this life he was in his fifty fifth year at Boston whither he was driven by a mad and deluded mob for no other offense than his loyalty to his sovereign. God forgive them and grant that his death may be sanctified to me and all the children for our souls everlasting good.
Friend Sturtevant studied medicine at Middleboro with an older brother Dr Thomas Sturtevant. After his marriage he went to New York state thence to Pittsfield Mass thence in 1804 to Woodstock Vt and in 1807 to Hartland Vermont where he was the only educated physician for some years and had an extensive pratice. During the war of 1812 he enlisted in the US Army as surgeon was quartered at Plattsburgh but was taken sick and returned home before the close of the war and continued the practice of his profession until his death.
