JAMES W.
JAMES W.
SON OF
W.G. & C.F. HADLEY
DIED
AT GEORGETOWN, D.C.
MAR. 20, 1861
AE. 28 YRS.
This stone is located in the Hartland Village Cemetery.
James W. Hadley was born in Hartland, VT 11 April 1834, the son of Wells G. and Caroline F. (Walker) Hadley. He did not marry.
He enlisted in the army during the Civil War on 1 June 1861. He was mustered in on July 16, 1861. He was in Company F, 3rd Regement of the Vermont Volunteers. He died the following year of "camp fever" at a Georgetown, D.C. hospital.
His gravestone (one side of a monument with his parents) says he died 20 Mar 1861. This is likely wrong since he died while in the army and he didn't join until July 1861. His death record (recorded in Windsor, VT) says 1862. Another death record, apparently from Hartland, says 1861.
