David and Mary Steele, Hartland, June 29.
Funeral services were held at the Brick church Sunday at 6 p.m. for David and Mary Steele, brother and sister, who died within a few hours of each other. David Sumner Steele, 66, died at the City hospital in Boston Thursday night. He was born in Hartland June 12, 1871. He leaves a widow, Edith Putnam Steele and a son Putnam Steele. He had lived in Boston and
vicinity for the greater part of his life and had been in the brokerage business.
Mary Hinman Steele, 74, was also born in Hartland. She was accomplished in many ways, having studied art and music in Boston and elsewhere. After teaching vocal music for a time in a school for girls in Illinois, she established a studio of her own on Michigan avenue in Chicago where she trained many successful vocalists, including one young woman who entered grand opera. After a number of years her health failed and she was as obliged to give up her work and return to the old Steele homestead here. About 15 years ago she went to Brattleboro, where she had been ill for a long time. She died Friday morning.
Services for the double funeral were conducted by Rev. Dr. William Forkell, and burial was in the village cemetery. Bearers were Lewis E. Merritt, Ernest N. Martin, Philip H. Royce and Frank E. Barrell. David and Mary Steele were the only children of Judge Benjamin Hinman and Martha F. Sumner Steele. Their death recalls the brilliant record of their father who died at the early age of 35. he graduated from Dartmouth college at the age of 20. On the election of Judge Luke P. Poland to the Senate, Steele was appointed by Gov. Dillingham to fill his place on the bench of the supreme court of Vermont at the age of 28. This place he held for five years, then returning to Hartland on the death of his wife's father, David H.Sumner and managing the large estate.
